Executive Compensation

Triggered by this article:

The AT&T chief executive will stand before the telephone company’s shareholders at its annual meeting in San Antonio today and undoubtedly face questions from shareholders about that $158 million retirement package that’s been cropping up in news reports lately.

Some key guidelines on deciding executive pay:

1. 80% of bonus to be tied to 2 year stock performance.
2. Base salary capped to 10X lowest employee pay at the country where HQ resides.

Only then can one avoid discussions about inflated pay...

Logica CMG to spin off telco biz

Apparently the telco biz will be acquired by a LBO company. There will be a difference between the product company and the SI business.

CTIA Wireless 2007 - Day 1 Notes

Overall impression is the event is actually much tamer than the Las vegas event and I suspect lower attendance as well.

Large device and radio vendors still rule the roost, with Samsung, Nokia having large booths and brand presence.

Microsoft is interestingly making noises in a much more significant manner having snagged the keynote with their SVP Peter Knook. The MS story is much more evolved now, and their architect Sam Christie for Communications sector did a good job of explaining the various layers from control to session to apps (his background from Lucent did help).

IMS@CTIA sessions: Top level take, IMS has a very different interpretation from every company in the value chain ( as can be expected); however the pleasant difference this time was the agreement in general that IMS truly will continue to be driven by "Customer centered" services; this dove-tailed very well with Samvit's talk on customer centricity. Cingular and MS also spoke about the same, and the new services term of mashups, web 2.0 and new telco services came to the fore - perhaps for the very first time in the last 2 years that I've been involved here.

The current debate is raging on policy - and balancing that with privacy concerns.

Events and some winter

Just concluded an interesting session in the NGOSS summit in Boston. Besides setting a record in cold weather due to an arctic blast which resulted in day time temperatures dropping to 13 degrees Farenheit (yes!), the event itself was pretty warm and hospitable.

Few memorable incidents:
  • Anil being chilled to the bone wearing a light jacket instead of an overcoat in a horrid weather.
  • SOA - instead of being pronounced as an acronym, was now being read as a word -"so-ah" (very weird. What's next ? e-bum for IBM??)
  • Computer Associates getting into the SOA game for communications and essentially talking about governance as the next step of SOA maturity.
  • BPM getting a lot of action: Progress Software, Vitria, Oracle, AMDOCS and everyone else looking at this as the next revenue avenue :)
  • The Italian panelist wanting a royalty payment everytime someone said "Sphagetti" code :)
  • The number of ways you can get de-Fraud-ed in telecom - really creative! - notes from our Interconnect expert from the Nordics.

COMversations on the web

It's a sad day indeed when you discover that it's easier to get a communications tool going externally than internally... I guess that is the new world!

In any case, we have an avenue to talk about things that are interesting that you care about.

I'll blog here frequently and hope you'll do too. This will be permissions protected to allow ONLY marketing for now.
